Lions
Diabetes Awareness Breakfast
UConn
Researcher Featured at CCSU Event
Sunday, March 27, 2011, 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.
Ever since Helen Keller asked Lions International to become
Knights of the Blind, Lions worldwide have contributed time, money, expertise
and energy to eradicate blindness. Now we face the greater challenge of diabetes
awareness and eradication. On Sunday, March 27, we will learn about the
breakthrough technology that will help diabetics worldwide to manage their
disease.
Dr. Ulricke Kluehe, researcher at the UConn Health Center, will describe her
research on continuous glucose monitoring – a fascinating area that affects all
diabetics. Her device, no larger than a grain of rice, promises to
revolutionize diabetes management for years to come.
Allison Kelly will also speak about her husband’s untimely death caused by diabetic shock while driving his automobile. She knows first hand the
importance of paying attention to the warning signs of diabetes. With one in
three children born in America since 2000 predicted to get diabetes during
their lifetimes, this information could save a lot of lives.
As Lions, we can move the mountain of public indifference to
diabetes and change the conversation about healthy life styles and obesity that
can save the lives of 57 million Americans at risk for Type 2 diabetes today.
We can also help end the suffering of millions of children who suffer daily
from Type 1 diabetes.
Let's bring as many members as possible to the Lions Diabetes
Awareness breakfast on March 27, and bring your club's contributions to this
urgent cause.
Yours in Lionism,
Bob Bessel
